Golding Promises Paid Support for Taxi, Bus Operators to Transport Rural Students

PNP President Mark Golding says a future People’s National Party (PNP) Government would subsidize taxi and bus operators to provide school transportation for rural children — a move aimed at empowering small operators while improving student access to education.

Probox, AR Wagon Operators Targeted for Support

Speaking at a PNP meeting in Portland West, Golding proposed tapping into the existing fleet of Probox and AR Wagon drivers across rural Jamaica. In return for transporting schoolchildren, these drivers would receive direct payment from the government.

The plan would start with 20,000 families and expand as the economy allows.

Criticism of JLP’s School Bus Plan

Golding took aim at Transport Minister Daryl Vaz’s plan to deploy 100+ government-issued school buses with tracking systems by September. Calling the buses “old,” he said the real solution lies in supporting grassroots transport operators instead of state-owned fleets.

Housing Pledge for Portland West

Golding also revealed a plan to build 500 houses in a depressed area of Portland West known as ‘Diamond’, pending the PNP’s rise to power. He said the land, though currently swampy, could be filled and developed for residential use.

Our Opinion

Golding’s proposal offers an inclusive approach to rural transport while promising job creation. However, the effectiveness of such a program will rely heavily on regulation, safety, and accountability. Meanwhile, the proposed housing plan, while ambitious, requires clarity on land preparation and long-term sustainability.
