KINGSTON, JAMAICA
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz has revealed that 110 brand-new school buses are set to land in Jamaica by early July, targeting over 258 rural schools across the island — a move he calls “transformative” for long-suffering students and families in the countryside.
🚌 Rural School Transport Gets a Major Boost
Speaking during a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) event in Trelawny South, Vaz announced, “I’m going to land in Jamaica before the end of June… 110 school buses dedicated for rural Jamaica. Nine of them right here in Trelawny!” He emphasized that this isn’t a competition with taxi operators but a mission to serve underserved communities.
📡 High-Tech Tracking for Parents
The new system includes smart card tracking so parents can monitor their child’s journey. “They have to swipe a card when they get on and swipe again when they get off… and we’ll know how the bus driver is driving too!” Vaz said, adding that all drivers will be police-cleared to ensure child safety.
🛑 A Message to the Critics
Vaz didn’t hold back when addressing detractors. He said opponents of the initiative are simply ‘double and triple badmind’, failing to grasp the hardship rural parents face. “Some of them that represent rural areas don’t understand what mothers and children go through,” he said.
🚍 The Bigger Vision: 850 Rural Schools in 3 Years
Vaz closed with a promise: if the JLP remains in power, a full school bus system will be built out for all 850 rural schools across Jamaica within three years. “You can choose badmind… or you can wish for what is good for you, your children, and the future of Jamaica,” he told supporters.
Better roads. Better buses. A better future.
