HOLNESS CALLS ON TRELAWNY FARMERS TO PLANT YAM FOR JAMAICA’S FUTURE

KINGSTON, JAMAICA

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is urging farmers, especially in Trelawny, to double down on yam farming, calling it a powerful tool for economic growth and global export potential.

🌱 Yam Farming = Economic Power

Speaking at a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) meeting in Trelawny South, Holness made it clear: "Don’t take yam farming lightly." He revealed that Minister of Agriculture Floyd Green has been tasked with creating a national programme for yam and other high-value crops like sweet potato and cho-cho.
“There is a significant global market for what they call ‘new foods’ or ‘functional foods’,” Holness said. “Yam is a healthy food. Jamaica can be a world supplier if we shift from raw exports to processed, value-added goods.
Holness announced plans for a dedicated yam and tuber processing plant, designed to modernize agriculture using new technology and open international doors for Jamaican farmers. This move aligns with the government’s broader vision to transform rural economies through agro-processing.
“Under this government,” Holness added, “Trelawny can expect the emergence of a new agro-industry that not only grows crops but turns them into high-value export products.” Farmers are being called on to see beyond the field and into the global food supply chain.
