Clash in Falmouth: JLP and PNP Supporters Face Off as Election Tensions Flare

Tensions ran high in the parish capital on August 10, 2020, as supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP) clashed during a political motorcade led by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

What began as a seemingly peaceful show of party support quickly spiraled into a heated confrontation in Water Square. Prime Minister Holness, who was touring the area with JLP candidate for North Trelawny, Tova Hamilton, accused PNP supporters of ambushing the motorcade.

The incident prompted swift police intervention to separate the rival groups, preventing further escalation. Supporters on both sides were dressed in full party regalia, waving flags and banners and blasting campaign music.

Holness condemned the incident during his tour, calling out the behaviour as unproductive and outdated. “No one in my party will have my support for this kind of conduct,” he declared, adding that the time for antagonistic politics had passed.

He further criticised the PNP's track record in Falmouth, stating that the town has seen little development despite consistently voting for the opposition party over the years.

Despite multiple efforts to contact the sitting MP for North Trelawny, the PNP’s Victor Wright, he was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

Our Opinion
This latest clash in Falmouth is a stark reminder of Jamaica’s deeply rooted political rivalries. With general elections just around the corner, tensions are understandably high, but resorting to disruptive displays only undermines democratic engagement. Political leaders on both sides must set the tone for peaceful, policy-driven campaigning, especially during a time when voters are demanding real solutions over theatrics.
