KINGSTON, Jamaica |
Prime Minister Andrew Holness continues to enjoy strong public support, with 70% of Jamaicans approving of his job performance, according to the latest Nationwide Bluedot poll conducted between July 20 and August 6.
The survey, which sampled 1,200 registered voters across all 63 constituencies, found that 46% of respondents strongly approve and 24% somewhat approve of Holness’s leadership. Only 22% expressed disapproval, with 15% strongly disapproving and 7% somewhat disapproving.
In contrast, Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips is facing a tougher battle with public perception. Just 37% approve of the job he’s doing as opposition leader, while 45% disapprove, putting him 8 points underwater in terms of net approval.
The approval numbers closely mirror each leader’s favorability ratings.
-
61% of Jamaicans view Holness positively, with 17% very positive and 44% positive.
-
Only 19% view him negatively, including 5% very negative and 14% somewhat negative.
-
By comparison, Dr. Phillips is viewed positively by only 27%, with just 4% describing their view as very positive.
-
30% of Jamaicans view him negatively, while a striking 43% had no opinion—more than double the 21% with no opinion on Holness.
The poll results suggest that Holness’s leadership style, public presence, and policy decisions continue to resonate with the electorate, especially as general elections approach. In contrast, the data underscores Dr. Phillips' ongoing struggle to energize support within a shifting political landscape.
The poll has a margin of error of ±2.75%, making these insights statistically significant as Jamaica’s political parties ramp up campaign activities.
Our Opinion
These numbers signal a commanding public endorsement for Prime Minister Holness as he steers Jamaica through challenging times. The data also reveals a clear enthusiasm gap between the JLP and PNP leadership, which could impact turnout and momentum as elections near. The PNP must now re-evaluate its communication and engagement strategies if it hopes to close the gap before ballots are cast.
